A Good Word to Remember: Commemorate

Do you know the meaning of the word commemorate? The word commemorate means bring to remembrance. It comes from Latin. The initial prefix “com-” refers to together and the root “memorate” simply refers to remember: remember together. That is a word dating back to 1600s. It is about memories and remembering. It thus means to perpetuate the memory of someone. The Turkish equivalent of the word “commemorate” is “anmak” or “kutlamak“. Here are some examples for you:

1. We always commemorate the founding of our nation with a public holiday.

2. The Turkish people commemorated the founder of their republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
