The word “arrogant” is a 14th century word that means “apt to give oneself undue importance”. In other words, an “arrogant” person is aggressively haughty. It originates from the Latin word “arrogantem” which probably means “assuming, or awaiting unquestioning obedience. The word “arrogant“, therefore, means “expressing feelings of baseless importance out of overbearing pride”. The noun form of the word “arrogant” is “arrogance“. The word “humble“, which denotes submission or self-depreciation, however, may be regarded as the opposite of the word “arrogant“. The word “humble” is a late 13th century word. Its noun form is humility. The Turkish counterpart of the word “arrogant” is “kibirli” (arrogance = kibir). And the Turkish equivalent of the word “humble” is “alçakgönüllü“, “saygılı” or “mütevazı“.
