Do You “Comprehend” or “Elude”?

To comprehend or to be conditioned, that’s the main issue!

Do you often use these words in your daily or academic life? “Comprehend” is an important word you need to know. As we know, the prefix “con-” or “com-” means “together” in Latin. The Latin root “-prehendere” means “to seize” or “catch hold of something.” Therefore, the word “comprehend” literally means “seize together.” The word “comprehend” normally means “to understand”, “grasp by understanding”, “include” or “take into the mind”. Comprehend means “kavramak“, “anlamak“, “idrak etmek“, or “anlamak” in Turkish.

As for the word “elude”, the word “elude” originates from the Latin word “eludere” which means “finish play”, “win at play” or “escape from”. According to popular etymology sources and dictionaries, the prefix “el-” is the assimilated form of “ex-” which means “out”. And the root “ludere” means “play”. Therefore, the word “elude” may literally mean “play out” or “evade”. In this respect, perhaps, the word “elude” was the initial form of the “exclude” (with respect to its meaning “get rid of”). Today, the meaning of “elude” has somewhat changed. For example, the first dictionary meaning is “escape mentally or physically”. And the third meaning is “avoid fulfilling duties or issues” et cetera.  Elude means “kaçınmak“, “anlayamamak“, “sıvışmak” in Turkish. Here are some examples with the words “comprehend” and “elude” in context.

  • They did not manage to comprehend the awful consequences.
  • She didn’t comprehend what I had told her this morning.
  • The student couldn’t comprehend the reading passage.
  • The most important element of successful language acquisiton is comprehensible input.
  • The company offers a comprehensive service to automobile buyers.
  • Their children usually tended to elude their responsibilities.
  • She was such an elusive person that she never told us her real name.
