and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you. Lao Tzu

The word “respect” is a 14th century word borrowed from Old French “respect” and the Latin word “respectus”.  It can be seen both as a verb and a noun in the English language. The prefix “re-” means “back, and the “spek-” part literally means “look or regard” or “observe”. The prefix “dis-” makes the word respect a negative one and gives a negative meaning (like disregard or not look or dishonor).  Therefore, the synonyms of the verb “respect” are alphabetically and respectively (=in the order given) “esteem”, “honor” or “observe”, “value” et cetera. Some phrases that includes the word “respect” are “with all due respect” which rougly means “I beg your pardon but…”;  “lack of self-respect”, which indicates one’s lack of dignity;  “mutual love and respect”, which shows reciprocal caring and regard; and so on. Remember that there are a few prepositional phrases that includes the noun “respect” being “with respect to”, “in respect of”, “out of respect to”, “in respect thereof”. These prepositional phrases may be used to mean simply “about” or “not about” depending on the context.

As for the Turkish counterpart of the word “respect”, we can use the word “saymak” which literally means “count” or “show respect”.  A good Turkish sample sentence would be as follows: “Hürmet etmek” and “itibar etmek” are other words that can be used instead of “saymak”.

Here are some examples with the words “respect” and “disrespect”:

  • Respect the other person. Respect your friends and teachers.
  • I respect your honesty. I appreciate it.
  • Respect for knowledge and respect for reason! That will probably make you a man of humility and self-respect.
  • We should all respect the classroom rules.
  • Both alternatives are eligible! A is optimal with respect to B and C is optimal with respect to D.
  • Asking prospective state workers and officers to take the same exam once again would be an incredible mark of disrespect.
