Edith’s Blog Post #1: Overview of the Origins of Basketball

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, in December 1891. Naismith was tasked with creating a new indoor game to keep his students active during the winter months. He hung a peach basket at each end of the gymnasium and developed a set of 13 basic rules. Literally it was a peach basket.

The first official game of basketball took place at the International YMCA* Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. The sport gained popularity rapidly, and the first official game outside the United States was played in 1893 in Canada. By the turn of the 20th century, basketball had spread to Europe and other parts of the world. The first professional league, the National Basketball League (NBL), was established in 1936.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). NBA was merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to become the NBA we know today.
