Today’s Word: Horde

The word “horde” comes from the Turkish word “ordu“, meaning army or camp.” It entered English via Polish (horda) and French, originally referring to the large mobile armies of Central Asian and Turkic peoples, such as the Tatars and Mongols. Over time, the term evolved in English to describe any large group, often in a disorganized or overwhelming way—though it can also be used neutrally or playfully in modern contexts.
