Do you know the meaning and the origin of the word earthquake? The word earthquake refers to a sudden shaking of the Earth caused by the passage of seismic waves. These waves are caused in turn by the release of energy stored in the Earth’s crust. It is a late 13th century word in English. It comes from the Old English words eorthequakynge or erþe + cwacung: eorthe + quakynge, which simply stands for earth (world) + quake (shake), which later became earthquake. The word quake may be used as a shorting of the word earthquake. The word “temblor” (from the Spanish verb temblar — English to tremble) is the American Spanish version of the word earthquake. Here are some examples in English and Turkish.
