Every morning, at almost exactly the same time, an old man crossed the town square.
Nobody seemed to know his name.
He wore a dark woollen coat, carried a small brown bag, and walked slowly with the help of a wooden cane. Yet there was one detail about him that everyone noticed: he always smiled.
He smiled at the baker arranging bread in the window, at the bus driver waiting at the corner, at schoolchildren rushing through the square, and even at people who never bothered to smile back.
At first, most people assumed that he was simply a cheerful old man. Perhaps, they thought, he had been fortunate in life.
But as the years passed, his smile became something of a local mystery.
“What could he possibly be so happy about?” the shopkeeper wondered one morning.
“I have no idea,” the baker replied. “Maybe some people are just born optimistic.”
One day, a young woman named Elif decided that she wanted to know the truth.
She followed the old man from a distance as he left the square. He walked along a narrow street, turned a corner, and stopped in front of a modest house. Before going inside, he stood quietly for a moment, looking at the building as though he were remembering something.
Then he smiled.
The following morning, Elif followed him again.
This time, she watched him leave the house carrying his familiar brown bag. He walked toward the town hospital and disappeared through the main entrance.
Elif waited outside.
Nearly an hour later, the old man emerged. He was carrying several small toys.
Unable to contain her curiosity any longer, Elif approached him.
“Excuse me,” she said. “I hope you don’t mind my asking, but why do you always smile?”
The old man studied her face for a moment before answering.
“Because I have a reason to.”
“What is it?”
He opened his bag and showed her what was inside. There were colourful toys, children’s books, and small handwritten cards.
“Every afternoon, I visit children who are receiving treatment here,” he explained. “Many of them are frightened. Some have been here for weeks, and others have no idea when they will be able to go home. I bring them something to play with, something to read, and, whenever I can, a reason to smile.”
Elif was touched.
“But why do you smile at everyone in the town?” she asked.
The old man smiled once again.
“Because you never know who might need one.”
There was a brief silence before he added, “Years ago, my own daughter became seriously ill. Those were the hardest months of our lives. We were frightened, exhausted, and often felt completely helpless.”
He paused and looked toward the hospital.
“There was a nurse who always greeted my daughter with the warmest smile. One day, my daughter said to me, ‘When she smiles at me, I feel brave.’”
Elif listened carefully.
“Thankfully, my daughter recovered,” he continued. “But I never forgot what that nurse taught me without saying a word.”
“What did she teach you?”
“That kindness doesn’t have to be extraordinary to matter.”
He closed his bag and smiled.
“A smile costs nothing. Yet sometimes, it can remind someone that they are seen, that they matter, and that they are not facing everything alone.”
Elif thanked him and began walking back toward the square.
Something felt different.
She smiled at the baker.
She smiled at the bus driver.
When a tired-looking stranger passed her on the pavement, she smiled at him too.
The old man continued his morning walk as he always had.
But from that day onward, his smile was no longer a mystery.
It had become a quiet message passed from one person to another.
We cannot always remove someone’s pain, solve their problems, or change their circumstances. But we can offer kindness. And sometimes, a small act of kindness gives someone just enough strength to take another step.
