Story of the Day: The Old Man’s Last Wish

For years, everyone in the small village had heard the old man speak about one final wish. He wanted to see the sea again.

He had grown up beside the coast, but after moving inland in his youth, he had never returned. Now, at eighty-four, his health was fragile, and most people believed the journey was simply too difficult for him.

“You should be realistic,” his neighbour told him gently. “You have had a good life. Perhaps it is time to accept that some wishes remain wishes.”

The old man smiled.

“I have accepted many things in my life,” he replied. “But I have never accepted that hope has an age limit.”

His grandson, Joseph, was the only person who took him seriously. One cold morning, he borrowed a car and drove his grandfather towards the coast. The journey was long, and twice they had to stop because the old man was exhausted.

As they finally reached the top of a hill, Joseph noticed that his grandfather had become completely silent.

Then he saw it—the sea, stretching endlessly beneath the morning sky.

The old man slowly opened the car door and stepped outside. He stood there for several minutes, breathing deeply, with tears in his eyes.

“I knew I would see it again,” he whispered.

Joseph smiled. “Everyone said you were dreaming.”

The old man looked at him.

“Sometimes,” he said, “a dream is simply a wish that refuses to give up.”

On the way home, Joseph realised that his grandfather had given him something more valuable than a final memory. He had shown him that hope does not guarantee that everything will happen as we wish—but it gives us the courage to keep moving towards what still matters.
