The English word yogurt ultimately comes from the Turkish word yoğurt. The Turkish noun yoğurt derives from the verb yoğurmak, meaning “to knead,” “to thicken,” “to coagulate,” or “to make dense.” This reflects the process by which milk thickens during fermentation.
The word spread from Turkish into many European languages as the food became more widely known:
- Turkish: yoğurt
- French: yaourt
- English: yogurt (also spelled yoghurt in British English and many Commonwealth countries)
- German: Joghurt
English borrowed the term in the early 17th century through contact with the Ottoman world, though yogurt did not become a common food in English-speaking countries until the early 20th century.
Benefits are yogurt are as follows: The nutritional value varies depending on the type (whole milk, low-fat, Greek-style, plant-based, etc.), but yogurt can offer several well-supported benefits:
- Good source of protein: Yogurt, especially Greek yogurt, is rich in protein, which supports muscle maintenance, growth, and satiety.
- Supports digestive health: Many yogurts contain live cultures (“probiotics”) that may help maintain a healthy balance of gut microbes. The benefits depend on the specific strains and whether they remain alive until consumption.
- Rich in calcium: Calcium is essential for healthy bones and teeth, and yogurt is often an excellent source. Many varieties are also fortified with vitamin D.
- Provides important nutrients: Yogurt contains potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin (vitamin B₂), vitamin B₁₂, and often magnesium.
- May be easier to digest than milk: During fermentation, bacteria break down some lactose, making yogurt easier to tolerate for many people with lactose intolerance.
- May support heart health: Unsweetened yogurt can be part of a heart-healthy diet. Some studies suggest fermented dairy products may be associated with favorable cardiovascular outcomes, though the overall diet matters more than any single food.
- Can aid weight management: High-protein yogurt can increase feelings of fullness, which may help reduce overall calorie intake when incorporated into a balanced diet.
