Phrasal Verb of the Day: Carry Off

Have you ever noticed how a single phrasal verb in English can carry both a sense of achievement and loss at the same time? The phrasal verb “carry off” is a good example of this kind of semantic flexibility. In one common usage, it means to successfully perform or complete something difficult, often with confidence or skill. A speaker might say that a student carried off a presentation brilliantly, or that an actor carried off a demanding role, highlighting the idea of success under pressure and the ability to appear composed even in challenging situations.

At the same time, “carry off” can also take on a more literal or dramatic meaning, especially in formal or literary contexts, where it refers to taking something or someone away, sometimes forcefully or as a result of external circumstances. For instance, a storm might carry off debris, or an illness might carry off many victims, suggesting removal, loss, or being swept away by an uncontrollable force. This duality makes the phrasal verb particularly rich in meaning, showing how context in English determines whether we hear success, struggle, or disappearance.

In Turkish the phrasal verb carry off can be explained under four different meanings as follows:

1. Başarıyla yapmak

  • She carried off the role perfectly.
→ Rolü mükemmel şekilde başarıyla oynadı.
  • He carried off the presentation despite being nervous.
→ Gergin olmasına rağmen sunumu başarıyla yaptı.

2. Öldürmek / can almak (formal or literary / resmî ya da edebî)

  • The disease carried off many people.
→ Hastalık birçok insanın canını aldı.

3. Bir şeyi götürmek / çalmak / kaçırmak

  • The thieves carried off the treasure.
    → Hırsızlar hazineyi götürdü/çaldı.

4. Sürüklemek / kapıp götürmek (poetic / şiirsel)

  • The wind carried him off into the night.
→ Rüzgâr onu geceye doğru sürükledi / götürdü.
